Tiny

Looking for wonder today, I poked my head out our backdoor and scanned the yard. Our current backyard is not a site to behold. I’m ashamed to say there are still pool toys sitting out from the summer kiddie pool we had blown up for a month in July, leaves all over that need to be raked away, and lots of decluttering, trimming and general maintenance needing to be done. As I scanned the mess, a bright spot of green caught my eye. It was just a tiny oval of green moss, growing under our smoker, which shouldn’t be there if we were up on our maintenance schedule.

This tiny spot in the world was so beautiful. I couldn’t help but to get a closer look. So much life was growing where it “shouldn’t” be. The color green was so vibrant and life giving. In the book I’m reading The God of the Garden, Andrew Peterson shares “our bodies experience healing merely being near the color green, and ‘nature’s restorative effects on the cardiovascular system are demonstrable in the body within a few minutes.’ It’s crazy, but it’s almost like God knew what he was doing when he made humans to be gardeners in the first place.”

I love how the wonder found in this tiny moment under our smoker is restorative not only to the air, (see my previous post on moss), but also on our cardiovascular system, our heart! Beauty to the eye and our hearts. Thank you Lord for this tiny gift of wonder and beauty today!
